Parent Behavior Management Training
When children show frequent tantrums, aggression, defiance, or difficulties following directions, parents often feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to respond. Research shows that the most effective way to address these challenges is often through working with parents directly, equipping you with tools and strategies that make a real difference at home and at school.
At CAPSS, we offer evidence-based parent support, including:
Incredible Years (delivered in individual sessions rather than groups)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
RUBI Autism Network’s Parent Training for Disruptive Behavior
Helping the Noncompliant Child (HNC)
These structured interventions have been shown to reduce disruptive behaviors, increase positive behaviors, strengthen parent-child relationships, and improve children’s overall functioning. You may hear these types of interventions referred to as “Parent Management Training” (PMT), “Behavioral Parent Training” (BPT), or “Parent Training”.
Common concerns addressed through parent behavior management training include:
Tantrums
Aggression or hitting
Not following directions or rules
Sibling conflict
Bedtime and daily routine struggles
Many of these children may have diagnoses such as ADHD, but a diagnosis is not needed in order to participate in parent support. In parent sessions, you’ll learn practical, effective strategies to manage difficult behavior and support your child’s positive development.
